Geneva’s Kautz Road reconstruction has been selected as a Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association Fox Valley Branch (APWA).
The Kautz Road improvements won in the Transportation category for projects between $5 million and $25 million. APWA awards recognize excellence in safety, environmental impact, project management, community relations, performance under adverse conditions, and construction innovation.
The Kautz Road project was a joint venture between the Cities of Geneva and St. Charles, with Geneva serving as the lead agency. Construction spanned from Swenson Avenue in St. Charles to just north of State Street (Route 38) in Geneva. Beginning in summer 2024, the $6.2 million project replaced failing pavement, improved drainage and safety, enhanced freight mobility, completed trail connections, and supported economic development in the area. Work concluded in spring 2025.
“The Kautz Road project transformed a failing, flood-prone corridor into a safe, modern, multimodal roadway serving residents, businesses, and regional transportation needs,” Geneva Public Works Director Rich Babica said. “The project also will serve as a driver for economic development for Geneva’s southeast master plan development.”
The Fox Valley Branch will submit the Kautz Road project for consideration at the APWA Chicago Metro Chapter level.
The award marks the seventh time Geneva has earned the APWA’s Fox Valley Branch’s Project of the Year. The City was previously honored for the:
- Wastewater Treatment Plant update (2019)
- South Street bridge replacement (2019)
- Third Street Commuter Parking Deck expansion (2016)
- Water Treatment Facility construction (2009)
- Third Street improvements (2002)
- State Street improvements (1995)
