Special Events & Promotions

Special Event Approval

Please review the updated Special Event Guidelines and submit a Special Event Application eight weeks prior to the event. The City's list of Approved Special Events is updated regularly.

A Special Event Application is required for annual approval of a City designated festival; any assembly or activity that utilizes public property, i.e., streets, sidewalks, five or more parking spaces and/or parking lots; and any activity requiring a high level of City services, i.e., police, fire, public works. An event completely contained on private property or on public property owned by another government entity (park district, forest preserve, county) does not require a City of Geneva Special Event Application. Block Parties and Tag Days are regulated by the Geneva Police Department and also are excluded from the Special Event Application requirement. To register for a Tag Day, please submit a Registration Form to the Economic Development Department.

Outdoor Merchandise Displays and Sales

Outdoor merchandise displays and sales are allowed on private property by the store occupying the building year round. The display must be adjacent and subordinate to a merchant's indoor space and doors/walkways must be clear. There are limited exceptions during certain events when an event organizer secures approval through the City's special event approval process. Regulations vary for Geneva based merchants, temporary merchants, French Market vendors, and food and vending trucks. Please refer to Outdoor Merchandise Displays and Sales guidelines for more information.

Children in costumes visit downtown Geneva each year for trick-or-treating from 2 - 5 p.m. on the Thursday before Halloween. Participating businesses are encouraged to display a sign, which may be downloaded here or picked up at Geneva City Hall. Each business may need approximately 1,000 pieces of candy for this popular event.
