Geneva, IL was established in 1835 and embraces more than 180 years of history, culture and architecture.
Historic Preservation began in the 1940s with the conversion of several residences along Geneva's iconic Third Street. The homes were adapted for use as boutique shops and tea rooms. Places within the Geneva Historic District, as well as individual landmarks identified beyond the historic district boundaries, make up the Designated Historic Properties.
In addition to those properties that are designated as historic, any property that is at least 50 years old may be considered for designation as a "historic district." Thus, there is a guide designed to lay out the procedure for landmarking and historic district designation in general.
Between 2007 and 2008, residents and Community Development Department staff prepared a preservation strategy for protecting Geneva's architectural character and collectively compiled the City of Geneva Historic Preservation Plan.
