The Geneva Police Department has welcomed its newest member to the force: Tommy, a 20-month-old Golden Retriever who will serve as the centerpiece of the City’s new comfort dog program.

Partnering with Healing Hearts, Geneva Police officially introduced and swore in Tommy during the June 23 Special Committee of the Whole meeting. Tommy’s primary mission will be to provide a calming presence and emotional support to those in need.

His responsibilities will include:

• Attending local events and presentations
• Enhancing a positive relationship between police and residents
• Participating in employee wellness events
• Visiting schools and educational institutions
• Providing comfort to those experiencing a crisis

Police regularly respond to incidents and events that have a profound effect on residents and officers. A comfort dog can help open lines of communication and offer a calming influence in difficult situations.

“I am thankful to everyone who has made this program a possibility,” Geneva Police Chief Eric Passarelli said. “I truly believe that Tommy will have a significant impact, provide valuable assistance, and comfort those who need help.”

Tommy’s primary handler will be Geneva Community Services Officer Brad Koontz.

Geneva’s comfort dog program is for support and will not be used for apprehension, narcotics or other enforcement-related activity. The public can request a visit from Tommy by filling out an application form available on the City’s website.
